The commissioning also includes the installation of the same lighting system on the existing Gateway Bridge. The new Gateway Bridge is a key component of the $1.88 billion Gateway Upgrade Project, one of the largest bridge and road projects undertaken in Queensland’s history. A State Government initiative, the project is being delivered by Queensland Motorways with design and construction by the Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture (LAJV).
When completed in mid 2010, the new Gateway Bridge will join its twin as on of the top 10 longest cantilever box girder bridges in the world. Webb Australia were commissioned by LAJV and Aecom to develop a concept for lighting the Gateway Bridge. The concept presented was for a single line of coloured light above a wash of light against the web of the bridge. The coloured light was originally envisaged as neon but advances in technology convinced Webb Australia that LED was a realistic alternative. Webb Australia then presented the alternative to the project team who agreed with the proposed system. LAJV’s Project Director, Hugh Boyd welcomed the appointment of ULA Group to commission the purpose built feature lighting for Brisbane’s icon Gateway Bridges. "ULA were selected on the basis of the group’s broad national and international experience, quality product, design innovation and expertise in the manufacture of LED products", Mr Boyd said. ![]() The ULA Group is proud to be working with the Gateway Upgrade Project team to illuminate the outside of the new and existing Gateway bridges with specially designed Anolis LED fixtures that will create the appearance of a seamless glow of coloured light – ‘a ribbon of light’ on the western side of the existing bridge and on the eastern side of the new bridge – a total of some 3.6kms of LEDs. The lighting system is made up of 2500 customised LED strips comprising some 90,000 individual LEDs and over 45,000 metres of cable. Control of this vast system is via ‘e:cue’ with over 5000 pixel mapped control channels, along with an intelligent DMX system delivered across an Optic Fibre distribution control system . Anolis and the ULA Group have established themselves as the market leaders in manufacture, supply, project design and management of such specialist LED lighting solutions. Importantly, true digital control ensures optimum results driving the LEDs correctly to meet the performance criteria. ![]() ULA’s Managing Director, Cuono Biviano said ULA Group projects around the world and here in Australia boast one of the lowest product and system failure rates. "All projects currently running in Australia with Anolis have virtually zero failures due to the high quality of product manufacture. Anolis have manufactured over 100,000 different lighting products and fixtures with a less than 1% failure rate globally – a testament to the high quality of our products", says Mr Biviano. ULA Group is proud to be working alongside the Gateway Upgrade Project team on this high profile project and the commission will further build Anolis’s reputation as a globally recognised industry leader in LED fixtures. ![]() The Anolis LED lighting system will enhance the iconic nature while also visually highlighting the engineering excellence associated with these internationally recognised bridge structures. Once works are completed on the new Gateway Bridge the existing Bridge will be refurbished including urban design features, new pavements and the installation of the LED fixture system to complete the ‘twin set’. www.gatewaybridgeopening.com.au
